YMCA 3-Minute Step Test

Estimate VO2max from heart rate recovery after a submaximal stepping exercise.

Equipment

30 cm (12 inch) step or bench, metronome set to 96 bpm, stopwatch.

The protocol
  1. 01Set the metronome to 96 beats per minute (24 complete step cycles per minute).
  2. 02The stepping pattern is: right foot up, left foot up, right foot down, left foot down — one step per beat.
  3. 03Client steps continuously for exactly 3 minutes, keeping pace with the metronome.
  4. 04Immediately after 3 minutes, the client sits down.
  5. 05Within 5 seconds of sitting, begin counting the pulse for a full 60 seconds.
  6. 06Record the 60-second recovery heart rate.
What to watch for
  • Falling behind the metronome pace.
  • Not fully extending the knees on top of the step.
  • Delay in sitting down and finding the pulse after the test.
  • Not counting for a full 60 seconds.
Normative scoring

Recovery HR <100 bpm: Excellent. 100-110: Good. 110-120: Above Average. 120-130: Average. 130-140: Below Average. >140: Poor.
