Clinical fitness assessmentYMCA 3-Minute Step Test
Estimate VO2max from heart rate recovery after a submaximal stepping exercise.
Equipment
30 cm (12 inch) step or bench, metronome set to 96 bpm, stopwatch.
The protocol
- 01Set the metronome to 96 beats per minute (24 complete step cycles per minute).
- 02The stepping pattern is: right foot up, left foot up, right foot down, left foot down — one step per beat.
- 03Client steps continuously for exactly 3 minutes, keeping pace with the metronome.
- 04Immediately after 3 minutes, the client sits down.
- 05Within 5 seconds of sitting, begin counting the pulse for a full 60 seconds.
- 06Record the 60-second recovery heart rate.
What to watch for
- Falling behind the metronome pace.
- Not fully extending the knees on top of the step.
- Delay in sitting down and finding the pulse after the test.
- Not counting for a full 60 seconds.
Normative scoring
Recovery HR <100 bpm: Excellent. 100-110: Good. 110-120: Above Average. 120-130: Average. 130-140: Below Average. >140: Poor.
