§ 01Body Composition
Clinical fitness assessmentWeight
Measure body mass for BMI, body fat formulas, and strength-to-weight ratios.
Equipment
Calibrated digital scale.
The protocol
- 01Calibrate the scale to zero before use.
- 02Client wears minimal, light clothing and no shoes.
- 03Client stands centred on the scale, arms at sides, looking straight ahead.
- 04Wait for the reading to stabilise.
- 05Record to the nearest 0.1 kg.
What to watch for
- Client holding onto something or leaning.
- Scale not on a flat, hard surface (carpet can affect readings).
- Weighing at inconsistent times of day — morning fasted is most reliable for retests.
Normative scoring
Weight alone is not normative. Use in combination with height for BMI classification: Underweight <18.5, Normal 18.5-24.9, Overweight 25-29.9, Obese ≥30.
