Clinical fitness assessmentWall Sit Hold
Assess isometric lower body endurance (quadriceps, glutes).
Equipment
Smooth wall. Stopwatch.
The protocol
- 01Client stands with back flat against a smooth wall.
- 02Slide down until thighs are parallel to the floor (knees at ~90 degrees).
- 03Feet should be shoulder-width apart, about 60 cm from the wall.
- 04Back remains flat against the wall. Arms can hang at sides or cross on chest.
- 05Start the timer when the client reaches the correct position.
- 06Stop when they stand up, slide down further, or thighs drop below parallel.
- 07Record time in seconds.
What to watch for
- Thighs not reaching parallel — ensure proper depth.
- Hands pressing on thighs for support.
- Hips sliding below knee level (going too deep).
- Back arching away from the wall.
Normative scoring
General adults: >120s excellent, 75-120s good, 45-75s average, 25-45s below average, <25s poor. Varies by age and training level.
