Toe Touch

Quick screen for posterior chain flexibility (hamstrings, calves, lower back).

Equipment

None.

The protocol
  1. 01Client stands with feet together, knees straight.
  2. 02Slowly bend forward at the hips, reaching toward the floor with both hands.
  3. 03Do not bounce or force the stretch.
  4. 04Note the furthest point reached: palms to floor, fingers to floor, fingers to toes, fingers to ankles, fingers to shins, or cannot reach.
What to watch for
  • Bending the knees to reach further.
  • Bouncing or jerking movements.
  • Rounding through the upper back only rather than hinging at the hips.
Normative scoring

Palms to floor: excellent flexibility. Fingers to floor: good. Fingers to toes: average. Fingers to ankles or below: tight. Cannot reach: very tight, may need focused flexibility work.
