§ 01Functional Independence Tests
Clinical fitness assessmentPerceived Recovery Status (PRS)
Gauge subjective readiness to train — useful for adjusting session intensity.
Equipment
None.
The protocol
- 01At the start of a session, ask the client: "On a scale of 1 to 10, how recovered do you feel today?"
- 02Record the number.
- 03Use the score to guide training intensity decisions.
What to watch for
- Client giving the answer they think you want to hear — emphasise honesty.
- Not using the scale consistently at the same time relative to training.
- Ignoring consistently low scores (≤3) — may indicate overtraining, poor sleep, or life stress.
Normative scoring
1-3: Very poorly recovered — consider rest or light session. 4-5: Below expected recovery — reduce volume/intensity. 6-7: Adequately recovered — proceed with planned session. 8-10: Well recovered — can push intensity.
