Track neck size for body composition profiling and sleep apnoea risk screening.
Equipment
Flexible tape measure.
The protocol
- 01Client stands upright, looking straight ahead.
- 02Measure at the narrowest point of the neck, just below the larynx (Adam's apple).
- 03Keep tape horizontal and snug without compressing.
- 04Record to nearest 0.1 cm.
What to watch for
- Tape too high (above the larynx) or too low (at the base).
- Client tensing neck muscles or tucking chin.
Normative scoring
Men: >43 cm may indicate increased sleep apnoea risk. Women: >38 cm. Also used in US Navy body fat estimation formulas.
