Hip Circumference

Measure hip girth for waist-to-hip ratio calculation.

Equipment

Flexible tape measure.

The protocol
  1. 01Client stands with feet together.
  2. 02Locate the widest point of the buttocks (at the level of the greater trochanters).
  3. 03Wrap the tape horizontally at this point.
  4. 04Ensure the tape is snug but not compressing.
  5. 05Record two measurements and average them.
What to watch for
  • Not measuring at the widest point.
  • Tape angled or twisted.
  • Measuring over bulky clothing or items in pockets.
How to read the result

There is no published normative standard for Hip Circumference that we would stand behind, so we do not publish one. Read it against the same client’s own earlier results instead: the direction and size of their change over time is the result.
